Article by Shujau, Ashjau, Mabrook, Asadhulla
1.0  Introduction
Today it is very easy to have a Diploma or a Degree form a specific field. But Diploma or Degree only is not enough in the stage of job recruitment. Each year thousands of students graduates from college and enters into the job market. One of the biggest barrier they face to get job is that all most all employers include experience in a related field for a specific time as a must in job recruitment section. How can a freshly graduated student get work experience? We believe the colleges and universities has a great responsibility to provide students apprenticeship programmes and prepare them for job market while studying.
It is very important to have experience in specific field of work when the people apply for the jobs. Currently colleges and universities should run apprenticeship programmes in order to prepare the students for the precise profession.
In this report we would focus on the role of colleges and universities in providing apprenticeship programmes and preparing students for their workforce. We would be prominence on how the apprenticeship programmes came to life by the indication of the world measurements and the importance of these types of programmes for students to prepare for their workforce. Furthermore we will be looking on recommended improvements which have to apply in this area.
2.0  Discussion
2.1 Background of the apprenticeship programmes
Apprenticeship programmes are being conducting in different names, different ways and different places all over the world a long time ago. Traineeship, Internship, preparation and training are the forms of apprenticeship programmes conducted by the colleges and universities or other institution. Some of the famous Islamic scholars says that this apprenticeship programmes are started in the life of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) as he taught the Quran to Muslims in practical. In the year 1946 Hitler issued an order which says all the students who is in the university should join the army and serve in a related field within the army. If a student is good in chemistry, he has to join the explosion unit to make the nuclear weapons. The outcomes of this method was very effective. We all have witnessed it. So after the war many countries started to use this technique. Before there were no sign of employers using college students in their workforces. There was no way to get experience and work skills while studying (Apprenticeship Programs Overview, n.d.).
Researchers start to believe in 1956, that students need the knowledge and the experience or the practical as well as of the field where they are gaining the knowledge. Colleges and Universities change their way of teaching methods in 1958 to teach the students effectively. They provide programmes which make easy them, to understand the knowledge or the content of the text book. So nowadays even in any class teachers conduct group works or games to inject the knowledge to the students more effectively rather than direct teaching (Colleges, 2011).
2.2 Measurement or Data on how much apprenticeship programmes provided by the colleges and universities throughout the world
Colleges and Universities try their best to hold the demand for the students. After the year 1958 apprenticeship programmes rating dramatically increased. Every three to four of universities conduct real apprenticeship programmes by the help of the workplaces such as hospitals, ministries and private offices. Most of the students are volunteer the schools, hospitals and offices in poor country in order to gain the experience. Over more than 21 hospitals in Africa are manage by the group of students with the help of senior management. Every small island like Indonesia and Maldives get 2 volunteer teachers from United Kingdom for a year to teach a subject which they are specialized on. All over the world more than 2 million students in biggest countries finish their Masters or education after volunteering on an apprenticeship programmes (Ministry of Training, 2014).
2.3 The Role of institutions to prepare students for workforce throughout the apprenticeship programmes
One of the main concern of global employers is that they do not get skilled and experienced workers. When they open a job post normally fresh college or university graduates apply and they do not have any skills that the employer can actually use. This problem can be overcome if the colleges and universities provide apprenticeship programmes to their students. These apprenticeship programmes will give an overall idea physically and mentally in the actual working field. These programmes will prepare the students for job markets with high skills and productivity than others for example if a student joins the apprentice programmes as a farmer then he will be working in a real farm, learning new techniques and all the things related to farming. Once he completes the program then he will have lots of experience and skills related to farming. He will know how to deal with the barriers faced to a farmer. Imagine the benefits employers will get to enjoy if they get high skilled and productive employers through the universities apprentice programs. There will be less production wastages, will be able to save lots of time because there is no need to train again and also the cost of training also can be minimized hence leading to more profit to the business (Apprenticeship Programs Overview, n.d.).
Each and every government gives a special importance to maintain a healthy unemployment rate within the country. Every year lots of fresh graduates enters the job market but a large proportion gets left out without a job. This is mainly because of lack of skills and experience for the job. However if universities are providing apprentice programs then it will be easy for employers to scout for productive labours. If there are many skilled labours coming out of these programs, then there is less chance that they will get left out. So there will less youngsters roaming around city wasting their precious times. Even though apprentice programmes are helping the economy indirectly to reduce unemployment rate, we believe it is a great responsibility of universities to conduct these programs (Persing, 2015).
A job makes us mature and responsible. We are still young and immature when we finish college because our eyes are not widely open to the world our experience and decision making skills poor. Apprenticeship programmes help students to grow their young mind and be mature. Nobody wants to be a responsible person, especially not at a young age. But an apprentice program helps us to start the mature process and somehow we will end up being responsible person. During this program we have to deal with lots of complicated situation so we will be learning from the mistakes or experience. Hence our decision skill increase. Global society needs responsible youngsters rather than gangs so these programs are very effective to make sure society gets what it want (I.Lerman).
3.0  Recommended improvements (Recommendations)
Motivated, active, experienced workers are made by the apprenticeship programmes conducted by the colleges and universities. People who take the full responsibility on the job they do, were the students who passed in those programmes. Skilled farmers, teachers, doctors, nurses and other employers are people who take place in the apprenticeship program at their education age. Their life got success because of the programmes.
However students who do not go through any of apprenticeship programmes feel difficult to work in the job. They are afraid to take the responsibility. Some of the nurses undergo unconscious when they see blood, because of lack of experience (I.Lerman). So it is very important to all the colleges and universities to provide students specific good apprenticeship programmes. All the colleges and universities must provide a good apprenticeship programmes for all of the students related to their field of studying. If it is not possible to do it in the college or university, students must to take the place where they are willing to work to provide an excellent workforce. By agreeing on volunteering the company will be benefited and the student will be benefited too. So it will help the company to evaluate the quality in the student by monitoring the work of the student. It also make the relationship between the companies and the institution (Persing, 2015). As a result the college or university will receive the trust of the companies in different forms, such as money fund, training sections, experience worker as a lecturer etc. If the college or university is fail to provide an apprenticeship program in specific field, they should stop teaching the subject to give the chance to the students to join a college or university which provide that type of program (Colleges, 2011). The most important role the colleges and universities should play on this, is to provide an excellent, perfect apprenticeship programmes for the students according to their studying. For example medical student should be present few operations under a supervisor. Educational students should go to classes to take the lessons and so on (Persing, 2015).
4.0  Conclusion

In a very short and sweet summary, expanding apprenticeship is a potential game-changer for improving the lives millions of people and for increasing the efficiency of government finance spent on developing the workforce (Persing, 2015). Apprenticeship programs yield far higher and more-immediate impacts on earnings than community or career college programs. College or University graduation rates, especially for low-income students, are dismally low (Ministry of Training, 2014). Even after graduating, they often have trouble finding a relevant job. Participating in apprenticeship programs rarely lose earnings and often earn more than if they had not entered an apprenticeship. Furthermore, apprentices are already connected with an employer and can demonstrate the relevant credentials and work experience demanded by other employers. Finally there are net gains flowing to employees from apprenticeship programmes (I.Lerman).
